Hammerhead crane a new Liverpool Hospital landmark
Liverpool Hospital’s skyline is reaching new heights with the arrival of the first of two giant hammerhead tower cranes as part of the $830 million Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct redevelopment.
The massive machine was delivered in sections and carefully constructed over two days to achieve its height of 65.9m. It will have a vital role in the construction of the new hospital building, the centrepiece of Phase 2 of the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct project. Liverpool Hospital General Manager Scott McGrath said the new crane was now a hospital landmark.
“Everyone is talking about it – it is huge – you can’t miss it,’’ he said. “We are very excited because it shows our redevelopment is making great progress. The construction site is amazing, with so much activity.’’
The electricity-powered crane has a reach of 75m and is able to lift 12 tonnes – the equivalent of around six cars, an anchor of a cruise ship or four rhinoceros. It will be used to move materials around the site and lift major pieces of equipment. The second tower crane is expected to be installed in June.
