Nepean Hospital Redevelopment reaches great heights
The Nepean Hospital Redevelopment celebrated the new Stage 1 14-storey hospital tower reaching its highest point.
In addition to marking the major milestone, the project also marked the unveiling of concept designs for Stage 2 of the redevelopment.
The NSW Government has committed more than $1 billion to Nepean Redevelopment Stages 1 and 2 to ensure communities in Penrith and Blue Mountains have access to contemporary, integrated health services closer to home.
The new Stage 1 tower is one of the tallest hospital buildings in Australia topping out at more than 100 metres with majestic views stretching to the Sydney CBD across to the Blue Mountains. The Stage 1 tower includes an expanded Emergency Department, 18 birthing suites, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, more than 12 digital operating theatres and more than 200 additional beds in contemporary and bright in-patient units.
Construction of Stage 1 has continued to make steady progress since the first concrete slab was poured in September 2019. Construction of Stage 1 is expected to be complete in late 2021 and will open in 2022 following an operational commissioning phase.
New concept designs were unveiled for Stage 2 of the redevelopment, showing the integration with Stage 1 and the expansion and upgrade of essential clinical services including:
- an Intensive Care Unit
- Medical Imaging services and Nuclear Medicine
- an in-centre Renal Dialysis Unit
- cardiology services
- more in-patient beds including paediatrics
- clinical support services including Pharmacy staff
- education and training facilities
- community health facilities
- a new reception area.
Extensive consultation and planning with clinical staff and communities will continue into 2021 to ensure the best design outcomes on Stage 2. Construction will continue for Stage 2 following the completion of Stage 1.
In addition to the Stage 1 tower, the following works have also been completed at Nepean Hospital:
- a multi-storey car park with rooftop helipad (opened July 2019)
- expansion of services at Nepean Cancer Care Centre (opened August 2019)
- new childcare centre on campus (opened in June 2020)
Both stages of the redevelopment are being carefully staged to maintain a high standard of patient care throughout the construction period.
