The second stage of the Nepean Hospital Redevelopment has marked a significant construction milestone, with the new seven-storey clinical building reaching its highest point.
This achievement brings the more than $1 billion redevelopment another step closer to delivering expanded health services for communities in the Nepean and Blue Mountains region.
The milestone was celebrated at a traditional topping out ceremony with the Member for Nepean, Karen McKeown joining construction workers, project team members and health staff.
The new Stage 2 building will provide a major expansion of health services, including:
- a new adult Intensive Care Unit
- additional inpatient beds
- medical imaging and nuclear medicine services
- clinical support services including pharmacy and in-centre renal dialysis services
- staff education and training facilities
- new main hospital entry and reception area.
The new clinical building will seamlessly connect with the existing 14-storey hospital tower delivered in Stage 1, improving access and navigation for patients, visitors and staff.
A welcoming main entry will anchor the building, complemented by the new Aboriginal Mudyin (Family) Centre, the first of its kind in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, providing a dedicated and culturally safe space for Aboriginal consumers, carers and families.
The top level of the building will house a new purpose-built palliative care unit, delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $93 million World Class End of Life Care program. This unit has been designed to provide greater privacy, comfort and dignity for people in the final stages of life, ensuring they receive the highest quality of care.
Extensive consultation with staff and the community has shaped the design of Stage 2 to ensure it meets the growing health needs of the region.
With the concrete structure now complete, work will progress on the internal fit-out, services installation and building exterior.
Construction of the Stage 2 building is expected to be completed in late 2026, with the facility to open following an operational commissioning period.
The redevelopment is being delivered by Health Infrastructure in partnership with Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, with CPB Contractors as the principal contractor.
