Nepean Redevelopment Project Zone update October 2025
Summary of the latest Nepean Hospital Redevelopment construction activities in October 2025.
This month, we spotlight construction of the new Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) as it edges closer to completion. We also welcome Year 9 maths students from the local Kingswood High School onto the CAMHS site as part of the maths and design project.
Scaffolding comes down to reveal exterior of new Child and Adolescent Mental Health building
The new Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Unit at Nepean Hospital is taking shape, with the building’s façade now complete and interior works well progressed. The purpose-built facility will provide specialist care for young people aged 12 to 17 across the Nepean and Blue Mountains region and is being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program.
Designed in collaboration with young people, carers and staff, the new Unit will feature 10 single bedrooms with ensuites, therapeutic indoor and outdoor spaces, and dedicated areas such as a sensory room, learning centre and media room.

Matt Russell, Director of Nepean Mental Health, says the new unit is an important addition to mental health services for the region.
“This is an exciting milestone for our community. The new CAMHS Unit has been designed to create a safe, calming and supportive environment for young people and their families. It will allow us to deliver care in a purpose-built space that truly meets their needs,” Mr Russell said.
The building's exterior has been thoughtfully designed - combining brick and metal work with sand and terracotta colours to create a warm and natural feel. It’s enclosed outdoor spaces, large windows, and metal perforated screens offer privacy and an abundance of natural light for patients, visitors and staff.
Construction is on track for completion in late 2025, followed by an operational commissioning period before the Unit opens to patients.
Local Year 9 high school students tour construction
A group of curious Year 9 maths students from Kingswood High School, recently swapped the classroom for the construction site, touring the future Nepean Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit as part of a hands-on design project.
The visit gave students a unique opportunity to explore the real-world application of mathematics in architecture and construction, with a focus on scale, measurement, materials, functionality, and sustainability. Supported by their teacher, Mr Bavaro, the students asked plenty of questions and engaged enthusiastically with the experts on site.
Director of Mental Health, Matt Russell, spoke to the group about the importance of the new facility and how it will support young people in the region. Donnelley Constructions Site Manager, Jason Pfeiffer, gave insight into the build itself, explaining how the team balances design intent with practical construction challenges.
The students left inspired, ready to apply what they learned to their own design concepts back at school. Their visit is a great example of how infrastructure projects can spark learning and creativity in the community. They will present their ideas to the project team in late November.
Construction powers ahead on the new Stage 2 building
Stage 2 Reaches New Heights
In early September, the new seven-storey Stage 2 building officially reached its highest point in construction, marked by a traditional topping out ceremony. A tree was placed at the building’s peak to celebrate this major milestone, symbolising growth and good fortune. The ceremony reflects the exciting momentum behind the project as it continues to take shape. The aerial picture above was taken in late September.
Inside the Build: Walls, Stairs and Imaging Units
Progress is surging inside the Stage 2 building, with walls now rising across Levels 0 to 6. These floors will house critical services including Molecular Imaging, Medical Imaging, Renal Dialysis, and the new ICU department. Meanwhile, the grand staircase at the new main entry is coming to life, with concrete pours scheduled in the coming days.

A Modern Façade Takes Shape
Work has begun on the building’s exterior façade, including the striking triple-height glass main entry. This architectural feature is a key part of the hospital’s modern, patient-centred design, bringing the vision of a welcoming and accessible facility closer to reality.
Education and Training Centre Nears Completion
Level 1 has seen significant transformation over the past month, particularly in the new Education and Training Centre. With more than 80 per cent of wall sheeting now complete, the space is evolving from a raw construction zone into a near-finished product ready for future staff and students.
Loading Dock Milestone
The new hospital loading dock is one step closer to completion, with the roof installation now finished. This essential infrastructure will support the hospital’s operations and logistics, ensuring smooth delivery of supplies and services once the building is operational.
Hospital pop-up connects the redevelopment with staff and community
The Nepean Redevelopment team recently hosted a pop-up event in the hospital, giving staff and visitors a chance to learn more about the major construction underway across the campus. From the towering new Stage 2 building to the upcoming Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit, the pop-up offered a space for people to ask questions and speak directly with members of the project team.
The good new is we’ll be holding another pop-up on Thursday, 23rd of October. These events are an important way to keep staff and the community informed and involved, especially as construction continues to transform the hospital.
Whether you're curious about timelines, design features, or how services will be impacted, the pop-up is your chance to get answers and be part of the journey.
