New cameras encourage family centred care at the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct
A new camera system is giving parents of preterm or critically ill babies in Liverpool Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) comfort and reassurance when they are physically separated.
Liverpool Hospital is the first site in NSW to go-live with the AngelEye camera system as part of the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct redevelopment.
The cutting-edge ‘babycam’ system gives parents and carers the opportunity to view their baby via live-streaming video anywhere at any time when they are away from their baby.
Parents can see live feeds of their baby 24 hours a day and receive crucial updates via text messages and photos from the care team.
Installed on 24 cots, the cameras help parents feel more connected to their babies when they cannot visit, reducing anxiety and worry caused by physical separation.
NICU Director Dr Nele Legge said the cameras encouraged bonding, reduced stress for parents and supported family-centred care.
“We encourage parents to visit their babies as much as possible but believe the AngelEye system will provide comfort and reassurance during those times when they cannot be with their babies due to work or family commitments,’’ she said.
Hospital General Manager Scott McGrath said innovation is vital to transforming the healthcare and experiences of babies and their families in the new state-of-the-art NICU.
“I am excited our hospital is the first site in NSW to go-live with the camera system and I thank the teams involved,’’ he said.
