New MRI machine installed at Wollongong Hospital
A major milestone has been reached in the expansion medical imaging facilities in the Illawarra, with a new MRI machine successfully installed as part of a $21.9 million investment in equipment upgrades at Wollongong Hospital.
The new service will enhance access to advanced diagnostic imaging for the Illawarra community, supporting faster, more accurate care closer to home.
The MRI machine was carefully craned into position on Level Two of the hospital in the early hours of the morning, marking a significant step in the delivery of the expanded medical imaging department.
When fully operational, the new MRI will support a wider range of diagnostic services, including breast imaging, biopsy procedures and cardiac imaging.
The upgraded medical imaging facilities will be located across two levels, with the MRI on Level Two and a new CT scanner near the Emergency Department on Level One, improving access to diagnostic services for patients presenting through emergency care.
With the MRI now installed, testing and commissioning of the equipment is underway ahead of staff training and operational readiness.
Construction of the expanded medical imaging department is expected to be completed in early 2026.
In addition to the imaging upgrades, the hospital has recently completed a relocated Medical Ambulatory Care Unit and expanded Transit Lounge, which will help improve patient flow and support outpatient care.
The MRI installation forms part of the NSW Government’s commitment to delivering modern, high-quality health infrastructure that meets the growing needs of the Illawarra region.
