New roads and ICU enhancements for John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct

Important changes to the campus will come into effect on 10 October when two new roads and roundabouts open. 

The changes will directly impact those visiting Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) with drivers being directed around the western and northern boundaries of the campus as indicated by the light blue lines in the image above. 

When the new roads are opened, Gumtree Close (which is the road leading down from the rear of the hospital to HMRI) will be permanently closed to drivers.

What to expect from the new Intensive Care Unit 

Nurse Managers Natalie Duns and Elizabeth Relf have helped with the design of the new Intensive Care Unit and Hunter Retrieval spaces in the new building. Find out more about the improvements in store that will provide more beds and greater spaces for families. 

Checking in with our Aboriginal community 

The project recently checked in with local Elders and members of our 4 Local Aboriginal Land Councils along with more than 40 Aboriginal staff as part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations. 

We're really proud of the relationships that are being forged with Worimi, Awabakal, Biraban and Bahtabah Land Councils as we work together on making sure the design is a welcoming space for all members of our community. 

We're doing this in the areas of landscaping and artworks, but also the physical spaces – like areas for large families to gather and of course the services themselves.
