Paving the way for the new $2 billion Bankstown Hospital
Demolition is underway at the site of the $2 billion Bankstown Hospital, marking a major milestone in delivering a new health facility for Sydney’s south-west communities.
The NSW Government’s record $2 billion investment represents the single largest capital investment in a public hospital in the State’s history.
The project is entering a significant phase with work underway to dismantle and demolish existing buildings on the site.
The interior strip-out of the old buildings is progressing, in preparation for removal of the main structures, with demolition and site remediation activities to continue throughout 2026.
The new Bankstown Hospital will deliver more beds and treatment spaces as well as enhanced health services within a new 14-storey building and a 10-storey car park. A separate emergency drop-off area and dedicated emergency parking will also improve the arrival experience for patients and carers.
The State Significant Development Application for main works construction was placed on public exhibition in April, and submissions are being assessed by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.
Subject to planning approval, construction of the main hospital is expected to start in 2027, following completion of the design and appointment of a builder.
The final service offering for the new hospital will be finalised as planning progresses, and is expected to include:
- expanded emergency department
- operating theatres
- intensive care unit
- surgical and medical services
- women and children’s health services including maternity
- mental health inpatient services
- ambulatory care
- cancer services
- aged care health services
- multi-storey car park and on-ground parking.
The new Bankstown Hospital is part of the NSW Government’s more than $3.4 billion investment over the next 4 years to deliver new and upgraded hospitals for communities across Western Sydney.
