Shellharbour Hospital construction progresses with major concrete works
Shellharbour Hospital's first concrete pour marks a key milestone, laying foundations for its new perioperative unit and state-of-the-art operating theatres.

Construction of the new Shellharbour Hospital has reached a significant milestone with its first concrete pour.
As the Illawarra region’s specialist elective surgical centre, the pour will form the foundations of the new perioperative unit which will house state-of-the-art operating theatres.
This milestone marks the start of a series of pours which will continue in the months ahead as the seven-storey structure begins to take form.
Approximately 300 cubic metres of concrete was used, and an additional 33,000 cubic metres is expected to be poured during the rest of the project.
The hospital is part of the more than $780 million new Shellharbour Hospital and Integrated Services project, jointly funded by the NSW and Australian governments aimed to deliver improved health outcomes and enhance patient care for local communities.
Once complete, the new Shellharbour Hospital will transform access to healthcare for the community and reduce the need to travel out of the area for a range of treatments.
The new hospital will include:
- an expanded emergency department.
- enhanced paediatric services, including a new paediatric assessment unit that will function closely with the emergency department.
- rehabilitation and aged care services.
- acute medical services.
- specialised elective surgery services.
- mental health services.
- renal dialysis.
- outpatient care services.
- car parking and improved public transport links.
The new Shellharbour hospital is expected to be completed in 2027.
