Smoking ceremony for the Moree Hospital Redevelopment
The Moree Hospital Redevelopment project team recently held a smoking ceremony to cleanse the site prior to the new hospital's construction.
As earthworks gear up onsite to ready the foundation for the new hospital building, a smoking ceremony was held with staff and the project team on 13 August 2025.
The ceremony was led by Paul Spearim and included a walk on the construction site and around the existing hospital campus. Importantly the walk included the location of the former McMaster Ward, which was especially for, and staffed by, Aboriginal people and reportedly closed in the 1960s.
The ceremony and walk was an important reminder of the work the project team is doing to connect with Country and the local Aboriginal community to ensure the new hospital is a welcoming place for all people to receive care.
