Sod turned on Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation project
Construction is underway on the Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation project.
A ceremonial sod turn event took place on site on 12 March.
Member for Maitland, The Hon Jenny Aitchison joined the project team for the celebration.
The project will deliver a modern, purpose-built facility to provide specialised mental health support for adults at the Maitland Hospital campus in Metford.
The new facility offers a transitional model of mental health care, which will include general and forensic mental health services, catering for both male and female consumers.
The service will include 64 secure forensic and mental health rehabilitation beds, each with single bedrooms and private ensuites.
The architecture for the new facility embraces natural materials and residential forms, integrating with the surrounding landscape to create a calm and welcoming space.

- Sensory rooms and therapy spaces
- Skylights and large windows
- Therapeutic gardens and walking paths managed by consumers
Construction is expected to be completed in 2028.
