Wollongong Hospital medical imaging upgrade now complete
Construction of the new medical imaging department at Wollongong Hospital is now complete, providing patients with access to upgraded medical imaging and diagnostic services.
The upgrades, which include a new MRI and CT scanner, are part of a $21.9 million investment from the NSW Government to enhance health services and infrastructure at the hospital.
The new MRI and CT scanner have been installed within a purpose-built area across two levels, with the CT scanner co-located with the Emergency Department on Level One.
The upgrades will significantly expand imaging capacity and support enhanced diagnostic services for a wider range of patients, including those requiring breast imaging, biopsy services and cardiac imaging.
Commissioning and training of staff to operate the new CT and MRI will commence soon, with both new services anticipated to start later this year.
In addition to the medical imaging upgrades, a relocated Medical Ambulatory Care Unit and expanded Transit Lounge was completed last year as part of the works, improving patient flow and supporting outpatient care.
Health Infrastructure and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District have worked closely with staff, clinicians and stakeholders throughout planning and delivery to ensure the upgrades meet the needs of the growing community.
The $21.9 million investment also includes funding to support planning for Wollongong Hospital’s future expansion. In addition, the NSW Government has committed a further $220 million towards the planning for future expansion and redevelopment of Wollongong Hospital and Health Precinct.
Planning is progressing, with detailed early works underway.
