Work to start to deliver new beds for Blacktown Hospital
Additional beds at Blacktown Hospital are one step closer, with a builder appointed to deliver the fast tracked project, which is due for completion in late 2026 - a year ahead of schedule.
The expanded bed base project is part of the NSW Government’s $120 million investment to further upgrade Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals and will provide expanded and contemporary acute inpatient capacity at both hospitals. The project, upon completion, will deliver a total of 60 additional beds across Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals.
Bringing forward the delivery of additional beds at Blacktown Hospital will relieve pressure across the hospital, including the emergency department, by improving patient flow and supporting hardworking hospital staff to better meet the healthcare needs of the growing Western Sydney community.
Icon has been awarded the construction contract following a competitive tender process and work is set to begin in the coming weeks. The 30 new beds will be added across existing wards within expansion zones at Blacktown Hospital.
Blacktown’s Emergency Department sees more than 64,000 patients each year, with emergency (triage category 2) patient presentations having doubled since 2015.
The bed expansion project at Blacktown Hospital will include new patient rooms, along with expanded clinical and non-clinical support service spaces.
Construction will be carried out in stages to minimise disruption, with hospital services remaining operational throughout the redevelopment.
Work to deliver the additional beds at Mount Druitt Hospital is progressing with the planning application for the project lodged late last year.
The $120 million upgrade of Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals is being delivered by Health Infrastructure and Western Sydney Local Health District.
The Government’s most recent 2025-26 NSW Budget included $1.3 billion of additional funding to support the delivery of health facilities and services across Western Sydney including:
- an additional $700 million for the new Bankstown Hospital, increasing the total investment to $2 billion
- Additional State funding of $90 million to provide the full range of maternity and birthing services as part of the new Rouse Hill Hospital, with a further $120 million announced by the Commonwealth Government towards new the Rouse Hill Hospital development;
- $492 million to develop a Statewide Pathology Hub on the Westmead campus;
- $40.1 million to fit out level 13 of the new Paediatric Services Building at Westmead in partnership with the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation.
- $22.3 million to establish a new paediatric hospice at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Other projects in the western Sydney region include upgrades at Nepean, Liverpool, Canterbury, Fairfield, Camden and Campbelltown hospitals.
