About the project
Reducing unnecessary energy usage is a key step in lowering HNELHD's carbon footprint. While we continue to upgrade our infrastructure to optimise energy efficiency, fostering sustainable behaviours amongst our staff will significantly enhance our journey toward net zero. Our SWITCH OFF campaign, encourages staff to conserve energy by using natural light, opting for smart computer settings and making efficient heating and cooling choices.
Project details
Tips to successfully save energy and SWITCH OFF.
Lighting
- Embrace natural light where possible.
- SWITCH OFF the lights if you are the last to leave the room.
Computer settings
- Open Display Settings
- Right-click on your desktop
- Select “Display settings”
- Brightness Settings
- Select "Display"
- Reduce screen brightness to a comfortable, lower level
- Enable auto-brightness if available
- Sleep Settings
- Select "Power & Sleep"
- Set the screen to turn off after 10 minutes of inactivity (when using battery power and when plugged in)
- Set the PC to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity (when using battery power and when plugged in)
- SWITCH OFF Your Monitor
- Manually turn off the monitor if stepping away for an extended time and when you finish for the day.
- Remember to leave your hard drive/laptop on overnight so that you don't miss out on any IT updates.
Heating and cooling
- General Settings
- Select "eco" or "energy saver" mode.
- Set the fan speed to "auto" or "medium".
- Cooling Temperature Settings
- Set the air conditioner temperature between 24-28 degrees Celsius. Every degree higher saves 10% on energy use.
- If available, use the ceiling fan to circulate the cool air.
- Heating Temperature Settings
- Set the air conditioner temperature between 18-20 degrees Celsius. Every degree lower saves 10% on energy use.
- Other Tips
- Close windows and doors when using your air conditioner.
- Close blinds (where available) to block direct sunlight and reduce the load on the air conditioner.
- Ensure filters are cleaned regularly for optimal performance.
- SWITCH OFF your air conditioner when it's not needed.
Project outcomes
We have site-level monitoring in place to track and analyse energy usage in real time. This helps us to track progress towards net zero and determine future opportunities to create energy efficiencies.
