Share the magic of Christmas with sick kids at John Hunter Children’s Hospital
John Hunter Children’s Hospital has officially launched its 2025 festive season with the lighting of its iconic Christmas tree, switched on by four-year-old Lola and her sisters Ava and Remi.
One of only three dedicated children’s hospitals in NSW – and the only one outside Sydney – John Hunter Children’s Hospital provides specialised care for children and young people across Northern NSW.
Lola and her family have spent many months in and out of hospital as she bravely undergoes treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Her parents, Laura and Brad, said their girls were very excited to help bring the magic of Christmas to other young patients and visitors spending the holidays in hospital.
“The Christmas season feels very different when your child is unwell and life is filled with uncertainty. Being together and having Lola still with us is the true gift,” they said.
“While we hope to celebrate Christmas at home, we know that may not be the reality for us and so many other children this year.”
The tree lighting event also marks the beginning of the hospital’s annual giving campaign, Share the magic of Christmas with sick kids. The community is encouraged to give generously and help create special moments for some of the region’s most vulnerable young patients.
Funds raised this Christmas will support improved patient experiences, hospital capital projects that benefit children receiving care, and practical assistance for families facing financial pressures during long periods of treatment.
Dr Paul Craven, Executive Director of Children, Young People and Families, said the campaign is a vital source of support for families navigating some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
“Time in hospital can be incredibly difficult for children and their families. Our Christmas appeal helps surround them with warmth, kindness and moments of joy,” he said.
“Our team is dedicated to brightening every young face this festive season, and with the community's generous support, we can continue to bring moments of joy to those who need it most, not just during the holidays but throughout the year.”
Throughout December, the hospital will host festive activities including visits from princesses, Knights and Jets players, animal friends from Blackbutt and of course, Santa.
Patients and their families can also enjoy Christmas craft activities, carols and special gift deliveries.
Community support ensures the hospital can continue creating joyful and meaningful experiences for children like Lola, all year round.
