About our lung health services
Our asthma service
Our Paediatric Clinical Nurse Consultant at John Hunter Children’s Hospital (JHCH) offers a dedicated Asthma Clinic, available both in person and via telehealth. Appointments are 30 minutes long and held on Wednesday afternoons or Thursday mornings.
The clinic supports children with:
- Asthma (diagnosed or suspected)
- Preschool wheeze (diagnosed or suspected)
- Viral-induced wheeze (diagnosed or suspected)
Referrals
A referral is not required. Parents or carers can call to book an appointment directly. However, children may also be referred to the clinic by:
- General Practitioners (GPs)
- Emergency Department (ED) staff
- Hospital teams following admission
What the Asthma Clinical Nurse Consultant provides:
- A thorough asthma and medical history
- Identification of symptoms, triggers, and risk factors
- Development or review of an individualised Asthma Action Plan
- Education about crisis and emergency management
- Assessment and correction of inhaler and spacer technique
- Discussion of further referral options, if needed

Paediatric sleep medicine
The John Hunter Children’s Paediatric Sleep Centre is the Hunter region’s only dedicated children’s sleep centre and laboratory providing consultations and sleep studies for paediatric sleep problems.
The Laboratory has four overnight sleep bedrooms and provides sleep services for infants, children and teenagers.
Services
John Hunter Children’s Sleep Centre runs the following services:
- Outpatient assessment and consultation
- Overnight sleep studies
- Home oximetry service
- Non-invasive ventilation service
- Multiple Sleep Latency Tests
Referrals
You will need a referral for this service. Your GP (General Practitioner), Specialist Paediatrician or surgeon can make a referral to the Paediatric Sleep Service. Referrals can also be made by E-referral via Health Pathways website OR by faxing the referral to the JHH Referral information management system (RIMS).
Our team
Our expert team performs approximately 700 sleep studies per year.
Dr Tanya Gulliver is the medical lead of the centre which is staffed by Laboratory Manager Sally Grahame, consultant sleep and respiratory paediatricians, sleep scientists and registered nurses experienced in the diagnosis and management of all paediatric sleep disorders.
