I love being able to provide education opportunities to ensure rural midwives can work to their full scope of practice which is vital in our rural maternity services. It is such a diverse role but one of the most rewarding aspects of my role is being in the birth suite supporting a student midwife to support a woman with the birth of their baby.

I’ve lived and worked at Tamworth Hospital for nearly three years now, so Tamworth is my home. It is such a beautiful place with so much to do for families. I don’t want to work anywhere else.
I was lucky enough to have an amazing birth experience at Tamworth Hospital myself about 2 years ago, I felt supported beyond measure by the midwives and that inspired me to become a midwife so I can support and advocate for the women of our community.

I am on my third rotation in the Emergency Department. My advice for someone considering Hunter New England's GradStart program is to jump in and do it! Don't overthink it, hit the floor and get to know everyone. The Educators are very supportive and everyone's constantly learning no matter how long they have been here for.

Meg
I moved to Newcastle for John Hunter Hospital because it's a level 6 tertiary hospital which exposes you to a lot of trauma cases without having to move to Sydney. Newcastle also has a good work-life balance; you can drive to the beach in the afternoon, and it doesn't take you an hour to travel to and from work. It’s kind of a small country town in a big city and the lifestyle here is just very cruisy.

All of the best nurses are grown in the bush and in rural areas. Your scope of practice is larger, you're open to more experience from early on, you'll be cannulated quite earlier. You'll be doing more advanced practice skills.
Enrolled Nurse
Enrolled nurses are pivotal members of the nursing team and provide exceptional patient focussed care.
To become an Enrolled Nurse (EN) in Australia, you need to meet several educational, registration, and practical requirements. Enrolled nurses are valued and supported in their ongoing employment and professional development.
See Enrolled Nurse career opportunities here - Careers as an enrolled nurse.
You must complete a Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) through a nationally accredited training provider, such as a TAFE or registered training organisation (RTO).
The course usually requires 18 months at full-time capacity to complete. There are many scholarships and NSW Health funded assistance incentives to assist you.
You can work as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) during your study as long as you meet the following criteria:
- Complete 20 units of Foundational Units
- Complete two weeks (around 80 hours) of clinical placement
- Provide a letter of proficiency from TAFE NSW.
If English isn’t your first language, you must demonstrate English proficiency.
After completing your diploma, you must apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) through AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency). Once approved, you’ll be listed on the register of practitioners as an Enrolled Nurse (Division 2).
You must demonstrate competence in the NMBA’s Enrolled Nurse standards for practice.
After registration, you can work in a range of settings (aged care, hospitals, community health, mental health, palliative care, etc.) or upskill through short courses or
Once you are a Registered Enrolled Nurse, you can work in a range of different clinical specialties under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). These are:
- Medical
- Surgical
- Mental health
- Paediatrics
- Orthopaedics
- Rehabilitation
- Oncology
- Operating theatres
- Emergency
- Ambulatory care
- Community health
- Patient Transport

The Enrolled Nurse Transition to Practice Program (ENTPP)supports newly graduated ENs as they build confidence, capability and strong foundational clinical skills in their first year of practice.
The program is designed for ENs who have recently completed, or are close to completing, their Diploma of Nursing and are seeking structured development, clinical exposure and career pathways across our network.

I’ve been an Enrolled Nurse at Manning Base Hospital for 3½ years, and the support here has been fantastic. The Level 5 team, educators, and staff are always there to guide you, especially during those first months, making you feel confident and supported every step of the way. I’ve had the opportunity to work across different levels and even in ED, which has helped me build my skills and experience. The location is fantastic too, close to the river, beaches, and great local spots, making it easy to enjoy a healthy work-life balance. For anyone considering the transition program I’d say absolutely do it! You’ll be well supported and have so many opportunities to grow.

Lily-Rose Pedersen
I joined the EN Transition Program straight after completing my Diploma, with the goal of gaining experience across different wards and exploring which direction or specialty I might want to pursue. Initially, I was very nervous translating the theory learned through TAFE into real-world practice in a hospital environment felt daunting.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have been placed with such a supportive and encouraging team. From the beginning, I was made to feel welcome and never felt like a burden when asking questions or seeking clarification.
My first rotation was in the Endoscopy Unit, and I’ve learned so much in a short period of time. I now feel confident working alongside doctors during procedures and caring for patients in recovery. I never imagined myself working in a unit like Endoscopy—nor did I know much about the procedures involved—but I now feel like a valued member of the team. I look forward to each day, working with colleagues who have become friends, and continuing to build my skills.
The support doesn’t end on the ward—the additional education provided through the program is invaluable. There is always someone available for guidance when needed.
I’m truly glad I chose to begin my career with NSW Health through this program. It eased the transition into the workforce, helped me build my confidence, and prepared me to step into a permanent role feeling capable and competent.
