Local council impersonation phone scam
ID Support has seen a recent increase in scams impersonating local councils.
NSW residents are receiving fraudulent calls from scammers impersonating their local council. These scammers are attempting to gather personal information under the guise of a local council telephone survey.
ID Support urges residents to take appropriate measures to protect their personal and financial information if contacted by someone claiming to be from your council.
If you receive a suspicious call from your council, hang up the call and confirm the legitimacy of their request. You can do this by calling your council on their official contact number. Your council’s contact number can likely be found on a former rates notice or on your council’s official website.
Remember:
- Do not send any money and hang up the call immediately.
- Do not reveal any personal information.
- Do record the phone number and then block it.
- Do report any suspicious scam/ behaviour to your local Police or report at https://www.cyber.gov.au/report-and-recover or the Police Assistance Line 131 444.
