Why international education matters in NSW
International education is NSW’s largest service export. It drives innovation, supports global partnerships and delivers major social and economic benefits.
NSW is home to world-class institutions and a welcoming, multicultural society. It’s the top destination for international students in Australia and the third most popular globally, behind the US and UK.
Talent and expertise
International students help meet NSW’s workforce needs. In 2023, they made up:
- 60% of IT graduates
- 50% of engineering graduates
- 36% of building and architecture graduates.
They also account for 42% of postgraduate research students in NSW. Their tuition helps fund 27% of all university research in Australia.
Many go on to work in startups – 13% of Australian startups employ current or former international students. Others return home and strengthen global ties in business, research and trade.
Global opportunities in education exports
NSW is well positioned to expand its transnational education (TNE) exports. Opportunities include:
- partnering with global universities to deliver joint programs
- enhancing offshore campuses
- using digital tools to reach more students abroad.
These models can help meet global demand, build skills overseas and grow NSW’s reputation as a leader in education and regional stability.
A new NSW International Education Action Plan is in development. It will support a competitive, sustainable education sector with strong student outcomes and long-term growth.
EdTech as a growth opportunity
NSW is a hub for world-class EdTech. The state’s digital education sector generates $1.7 billion in annual revenue, including $528 million from exports.
With growing demand from Indonesia, India and Vietnam – and established markets in the UK and US – there are strong opportunities to invest in education technology that can scale globally.
Cultural enrichment and global ties
Beyond economics, international education enriches NSW’s cultural fabric. International students bring new ideas, perspectives and connections that benefit communities across the state.
They help make NSW more inclusive, collaborative and globally connected.
