Investment NSW Case Study - Going Global Export Program - Briar Ridge Vineyard

Briar Ridge Vineyard is a family-owned and operated business.
It's been in the Hunter Valley for 52 years now.
It was started in 1972.
An export program was something that I was very keen on from the very first day I got here.
The wines are fantastic, but we just need to let more people know about how fantastic they are.
As a small business, the challenge is getting in front of people, getting those market introductions, having the support on the ground in the countries you're going to.
So I contacted Investment New South Wales and the rest is history.
The Going Global Program has been really beneficial for us.
The first program we went in for was in South Korea, and I knew nothing about South Korea, so we built a pitch deck, they translated it into Korean.
We got the support of one-on-one meetings.
We also had a food and wine exhibition that Investment New South Wales put up a stand for, and we were able to travel over and be front and centre with the people over there who were looking to buy Australian wines.
But it's also on on market competitors, it's on local pricing, it's on regulatory issues that you may come across.
There's assistance on all those levels.
You've got your International Expos, the pitch decks, which, not just translated into the the local languages, but built with a an idea of the local markets.
The US, obviously, it's the largest fine wine market.
We've managed to get into five states over there, and that's thanks to Going Global and their relationships with other industry bodies.
They make it relevant to a small business.
The surprise also was the amount of support that we get.
I'm getting phone calls every two or 3 weeks from the team just making sure that everything's okay, just checking in to see if we've got any problems, if there's any issues that they can help us with, that they're interested and they're keen for your successes and if you don't have a success, they're always trying to work out why.
I'm really, really proud of what we've been able to achieve, and I'm pleased to have done it with this team.

Hunter Valley wines reach new global markets

Briar Ridge Vineyard is based in the Hunter Valley, one of Australia’s oldest wine regions. It produces small, premium batches of Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay.

The winery is known for its quality winemaking and hands-on approach to production.

Support through Going Global Export Programs

Briar Ridge joined Investment NSW’s Going Global Export Program. This program helps NSW businesses enter new international markets.

With support from these programs, Briar Ridge successfully expanded to South Korea, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The winery’s success came from:

  • maintaining strong product quality
  • fully engaging in export activities
  • building strong customer relationships in each market.
