The Hunter Local Land Services region covers an area of 33,000 square kilometres east of the Great Dividing Range. Along the coast the region extends north from Lake Macquarie to Taree and three nautical miles out to sea.
There are around 670,000 people currently living in the Hunter Local Land Services region and the natural resources of the Hunter region support a wide range of industries, including:
- agriculture
- coal mining
- power generation
- forestry
- fishing
- tourism
- recreation.
Residential and commercial development dominates the coastal fringe and the Hunter region is also well known for its thoroughbred horse industry and vineyards.
Regional advisory group
Local Community Advisory Groups ensure we meet our community's needs and are a legislative requirement under the Local Land Services Act 2013.
Community advisory group members work with the Hunter Local Land Services board on key issues related to:
- agriculture
- plant and animal biosecurity
- emergency management
- natural resource management.
The groups are intended to provide high level advice to Local Land Services on the full range of its services and functions. They form a key part of Local Land Services' community engagement framework and help guide the strategic direction of Hunter Local Land Services.
Hunter Local Land Services Aboriginal Community Advisory Group (ACAG) meets twice a year.
The group consists of 10 Local Aboriginal Land Councils and 15 community members representing key issues and opportunities on behalf of their local community groups and organisations from across the Hunter and Manning Great Lakes.
The Hunter Regional Pest Animal Committee is tasked with encouraging cross tenure pest animal management, developing local pest animal management plans, consulting with stakeholders and advising the State Pest Animal Committee.
The committee has 10 members selected by relevance of their sector to pest animal management and is supported by working groups on specific issues.
The purpose of the Hunter Regional Weed Committee (HRWC) is to provide ‘tenure neutral’ strategic planning and coordination of weed management activities at the regional level. These activities play an integral part in an overall state weed management framework.
The committee:
- supports implementation of the weeds components and underlining principles of the NSW Biosecurity Strategy, NSW Biosecurity Act and the NSW Invasive Species Plan 2015-2022
- provides advice to the Board regarding delivery weed functions for the Local Land Services consistent with the Local Strategic Plan
- develops innovative and effective regional weed management strategic plans that consider risks, include all land tenure, and major stakeholders in the landscape
- provides a forum for the community and stakeholders in decision making, and develop communication education and awareness programs based on local and/or regional priority weeds and issues.
