Get involved in the upcoming spring wild dog and fox baiting program
Greater Sydney Local Land Services is encouraging landholders from the Central Coast, Wollondilly/Macarthur and Hawkesbury/Kurrajong areas to join this spring's coordinated wild dog and fox baiting program to help protect livestock, pets and native wildlife.
Spring is one of the most effective times to control wild dogs and foxes, as it coincides with lambing and calving on many properties. Reducing predator numbers before and during this period helps minimise livestock losses. Coordinated baiting across neighbouring properties can significantly reduce pest animal numbers before populations increase.
Greater Sydney Local Land Services Acting Team Leader for Invasive Species and Plant Health, Gareth Cleal said working together was the most effective way to manage pest animals.
"Pest animals don't recognise property boundaries, so our best defence is a coordinated approach," Gareth said.
"When neighbouring landholders work together, we can achieve far better results than any single property acting alone."
Under the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015, all landholders have a biosecurity duty to manage pest animals on their land. Greater Sydney Local Land Services supports landholders by coordinating baiting programs and providing the training, advice and tools needed to participate safely.
Support available includes:
- free Vertebrate Pesticide Induction Training (VPIT)
- subsidised or free 1080 baits for eligible landholders
- loan equipment, including trail cameras
- tailored advice from local biosecurity officers.
The free VPIT course provides the accreditation required to use 1080, Pindone, RHDV or PAPP baits in NSW and is available online or through face-to-face training sessions where demand exists.
"Whether you're protecting livestock, native wildlife or your domestic pets, our biosecurity officers can help you choose the right control options and coordinate with your neighbours," Gareth said.
Landholders are also encouraged to report wild dog and fox activity through FeralScan to help guide future control efforts.
To join this spring's baiting program, please fill in this expression of interest form by Friday 14 August or contact Greater Sydney Local Land Services on 1300 795 299.
