Local projects support the environment
Western Local Land Services is making significant progress in delivering four projects with a total value of $5 million to protect the natural and cultural environment.
The projects are funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by Western Local Land Services, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
The projects, which are being delivered over five years to 2028, are focusing on:
- improving the ecological character of the Caryapundy Swamp Ramsar site
- improving the condition of the Mallee Bird Community of the Murray Darling Depression Bioregion
- reducing threats to the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area
- rehabilitating Country for the Grey Range Thick-billed Grasswren.
Some of the highlights of the work achieved across the four projects in the 2024-25 financial year include:
- entering into collaborative agreements with landholders and stakeholders who are assisting the delivery of the projects
- engaging with Traditional Custodians who have provided advice and input across project planning, project delivery and sharing of traditional ecological knowledge
- hosting community information days and events about the projects
- completing plant and animal surveys, site assessments, baseline monitoring, and Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Surveys prior to on-ground works commencing
- undertaking on-ground works, including pest animal control, weed control and erosion control through strategic earthworks.
With significant progress made since the projects commenced, numerous activities are planned for the coming years up to 2028.
The projects are being delivered by dedicated staff with support from stakeholders, including local landholders, Traditional Custodians, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the state government, plant and animal species experts, and technical specialists.
