Monitoring of project sites confirms regeneration of Sandhill Pine Woodlands in Western NSW
Pleasing results have been recorded by local landholders and Western Local Land Services following monitoring activities as part of the Sandhill Pine Woodland Restoration project, undertaken in the Hillston area.
Through the project, three landholders direct seeded 80 kg of native seed across 134 hectares to help regenerate the Sandhill Pine Woodlands, along with undertaking activities such as fencing to control total grazing pressure and weed control.
Senior Land Services Officer from Western Local Land Services, Andrea Cashmere has seen many benefits for the Sandhill Pine Woodland community, landholders and the environment throughout the project, which commenced in 2021.
“We have had regeneration in all the sites which is great, however results have varied,” Andrea said.
“It appears that the sites that had an existing overstorey of Pine have responded better than those who didn’t.
“Managing grazing pressure and removal of weeds combined with good seasons has also greatly assisted with the regeneration of Pine and other species to occur naturally.
“I am confident that the regeneration will continue, the seeds that we planted will remain viable in the soil for years to come.”
Monitoring points have been established on the project sites and will continue to be monitored annually.
In addition to the on-ground works, the project has been successful in raising awareness about the Sandhill Pine Woodlands.
Sandhill Pine Woodlands are an incredibly diverse, ancient and unique part of the NSW Riverina landscape.
They are associated with prior streams, rises and dunes bordering rivers and streams. For various reasons the Community is now under threat of becoming extinct.
This project will conclude at the end of the year and has been assisted by the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust.
