Restoring flow and reviving habitat in the Capertee River
In partnership with local community groups, recreational fishers and government agencies, Central Tablelands Local Land Services has led a fish habitat rehabilitation project in the Capertee Valley to improve the health of the Capertee River and support the recovery of native fish species, including the endangered Blue Mountains Perch.
The Connecting the Capertee project focused on removing a significant barrier to fish passage at Glen Davis, where 7 car and truck chassis had been dumped in the river.
Identified during habitat mapping conducted by NSW DPIRD - Fisheries, these structures were obstructing fish movement. Their removal has now reconnected 24.8 kilometres of upstream river habitat, enabling native fish to migrate, breed, and thrive in a healthier aquatic ecosystem.
The project also stabilised a failing riverbank adjacent to the former barrier site, improving safety for recreational users and reducing erosion.
Revegetation with endemic native species will enhance bank stability, improve water quality, and improve habitat for local wildlife.
Weed control was also carried out to support the recovery of native vegetation and maintain the ecological integrity of the river channel and banks.
Mike Ashelford from Central Tablelands Local Land Services said the project delivers long-term benefits for both the environment and the community.
"By restoring fish passage and repairing our riverbanks, we're supporting the recovery of native species and enhancing the quality of recreational access to the Capertee River," he said.
"This work also helps raise awareness about the impacts of fish barriers and sediment loss in our waterways."
Project partners included Wallerawang Acclimatisation Society Inc., North East Wiradjuri Company, Australian Train and Railway Services, Capertee Valley Landcare Inc, and Lithgow City Council.
Funding for this project was provided by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's Recreational Fishing Trust's Habitat Action Grant Program.
