As part of the Good Neighbours Program, Western Local Land Services will provide direct support to help private and public landholders to control the invasive Boxing Glove cactus.
Working together in the fight against boxing glove cactus - Good Neighbours Program
Local Land Services' Good Neighbours Program aims to protect the NSW economy, environment and community by investing in pest and weed management.
Project background
Boxing Glove cactus (Cylindropuntia fulgida var. mamillata) has continued to spread across regions in Western NSW. Favourable conditions have made it difficult to manage infestations.
Several land holdings near Sturt National Park and the Tibooburra area have continued to see the weed spread. This threatens public spaces in the Tibooburra area and the environment within Sturt National Park.
Project delivery
The Boxing Glove Control project commenced in 2025.
Western Local Land Services is working with private and public landholders to control the cactus by:
- surveying the Tibooburra area to map cacti
- supporting local contractors with on-ground activities
- targeted treatment of sentinel cacti with cochineal to maximise impact
- holding community engagement and awareness activities
- providing of training and initial control support to landholders for ongoing activity.
