As part of the Good Neighbours Program, South East Local Land Services will take a collaborative approach to improve the surveillance and management of orange hawkweed across public and private land holdings in and around Kosciuszko National Park.
Project background
Orange hawkweed (Pilosella aurantiaca) is a significant threat to biodiversity in the alpine regions of Australia.
Modelling of potential spread shows major concerns for conservation areas and adjoining private land holders.
Since orange hawkweed was found in Kosciuszko National Park in 2003, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service's Hawkweed eradication program has been working to eradicate the weed and prevent its spread.
Project delivery
The Orange Hawkweed Control project commenced in 2025.
South East Local Land Services is building on the success of current weed control work by:
- providing additional resources for control
- increased aerial imagery to detect new infestations
- working with local stakeholders to improve the effectiveness of monitoring and control.
Project updates

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service’s detector dog Connor is playing an important role in the hawkweed eradication program.
Connor is trained to detect orange hawkweed by scent and alert officers to its location.

Connor’s work allows the team to identify infestations early, including weeds that may be difficult to detect through visual surveys alone.
Once found, marked infestations are treated and monitored to support ongoing eradication efforts to protect the National Park and adjoining neighbours.
Local Land Services is helping to strengthen surveillance and management efforts across public and private land holdings around Kosciuszko National Park.
