Central West Local Land Services is leading a revegetation initiative to improve the condition and extent of significant threatened ecological communities across the Central West region.
The project focuses on planting trees to support and expand existing woodlands, targeting areas of high ecological value.
Participating landholders will receive habitat enhancement plantings via tubestock or direct seeding, and tailored technical support to assist in the ongoing management of woodland areas.
This effort aims to strengthen biodiversity, restore native vegetation, and build resilience in the landscape.
Project objectives
To increase or enhance areas of priority vegetation throughout the Central West LLS region. This includes the vegetation communities of:
- White Box-Yellow Box-Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland and Derived Native Grassland
- Weeping Myall Woodlands
- Grey Box (Eucalyptus microcarpa) Grassy Woodlands and Derived Native Grasslands of south-eastern Australia
- Coolibah-Black Box Woodlands of the Darling Riverine Plains and the Brigalow Belt South Bioregions
Project background
Threatened Ecological Communities have declined significantly throughout the Central West Local Land Services region. Revegetating and supporting these vegetation communities is an ongoing priority and builds upon previous Healthy Landscapes initiatives.
Project delivery
- Determining priority areas for vegetation.
- On-ground management activity with landholders.
- Conservation monitoring.
- Community engagement, awareness and capacity building.
How to get involved
Expressions of interest are now open.
Applications close Friday 21 November 2025.
Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria, and agree to comply with the project standards as outlined in more detail below.
- Landholder commitments – Landholders will be required to organise their own site preparation, planting of tubestock and ongoing maintenance as per planting plan and advice from Local Land Services.
- Stock Exclusion – Stock are to be excluded for a minimum of 3 years to enable successful plant establishment.
- Pest plant and pest animal control – pest animals and pest plants must be controlled on the site for the duration of the agreement.
Eligibility
Successful applicants must meet the following criteria and agree to meet ongoing project commitments.
- The applicant must have $20 million public liability insurance.
- Non-payment of rates and other Local Land Services fees and accounts will result in application ineligibility
Project area
- The project area must be located within the Central West Local Land Services region.
- The project area must be a minimum of 2 hectares and have a minimum width of 25 metres.
- Preference will be given to projects which increase or enhance areas of priority vegetation including:
- White Box-Yellow Box-Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland and Derived Native Grassland
- Weeping Myall Woodlands
- Grey Box (Eucalyptus microcarpa) Grassy Woodlands and Derived Native Grasslands of South-eastern Australia
- Coolibah-Black Box Woodlands of the Darling Riverine Plains and the Brigalow Belt South Bioregions.
Project implementation time
A project agreement between the landholder and Central West LLS will be established.
All project activities must be completed by 30 June 2026.
Duration of the project agreement is 10 years.
Site preparation
Landholders will be required to organise their own site preparation. As a guide, a minimum 6 months of weed control activities should be undertaken to prepare a site for revegetation. This includes weed control and deep soil cultivation in sites with compacted soils.
Weed control involves a minimum of 3 targeted applications of knock down herbicide to prepare sites for direct seeding and/or seedling planting.
Revegetation plan
A revegetation plan will be developed for the project site by Local Land Services in consultation with the project applicant. The plan will include:
- site design
- species list
- the position, width and length of the planting arrangement
- site preparation requirements.
Supplementary planting
Tubestock and seed purchase will be coordinated by Local Land Services.
Landholders will be required to organise their own planting of tubestock and ongoing maintenance as per revegetation plan and advice from Central West LLS.
Local Land Services staff will undertake direct seeding within the project areas as required.
Habitat features
Dead standing, fallen timber and rocks are important habitat features and must be retained on the project site. Movement of these features within the site is permitted only if they present a hazard.
Native vegetation
Under the Local Land Services Act 2013, any land under this project area cannot be used as a set aside for the duration of the agreement term.
The project area may be eligible for activities under Environmental Protection Works in accordance with the LLS Act and will require an approved project variation.
Cultural heritage survey
Project activities and ongoing site management must not cause damage to any known cultural heritage sites.
Central West LLS will coordinate a contractor to undertake an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Survey of the project site.
Cultural heritage sites identified within the project area will be maintained, protected, and recorded in the NSW Aboriginal Heritage Information Management System.
Read more about protecting cultural heritage.
Current contractual arrangements and outstanding payments
Landholders with current Central West Local Land Services agreements must have completed their contractual obligations (including monitoring) to be deemed eligible for funding.
Non-payment of rates and other Local Land Services fees and accounts may also result in application ineligibility.
Stock exclusion - grazing management
All stock are to be excluded from revegetation sites for a minimum of 3 years.
Pest plant and pest animal control
All pest animals and pest plants must be controlled on the site for the duration of the agreement.
Chemical control must only be with a registered herbicide and in accordance with the directions on the label. If spraying along waterways, only chemicals registered for use around waterways are permitted.
General biosecurity duty
Under the Biosecurity Act 2015 there is a general obligation on all landholders to be aware of their surroundings and take action to prevent the introduction and spread of pests, diseases, weeds and contaminants.
Read about your general biosecurity duty.
Monitoring and evaluation
Applicants are required to adhere to and maintain monitoring records for the duration of the agreement, as per the Local Land Services monitoring program.
Staff will establish monitoring sites and methods appropriate to your project. Staff will return throughout the term of the agreement to continue monitoring.
Field day activities
Applicants may be required to make their activity site available for the Central West Local Land Services to conduct educational field day activities or provide information for case studies.
