Project overview
The Safe havens for native species project focuses on improving native habitat to support birds, bats, and other native species across priority areas by installing wildlife drinkers and 3D nest boxes.
Project objectives
By working alongside landholders across the Central West region, the initiative aims to:
- strengthen biodiversity
- improve ecosystem health
- contribute to long‑term landscape resilience.
Project background
Native species across the Central West continue to face challenges due to habitat loss, reduced water availability, and limited safe nesting opportunities.
In response, Central West Local Land Services has partnered with WIRES and WildSip to deliver practical, targeted support for wildlife through the Water for Wildlife Program.
The project builds on the success of existing conservation initiatives ensuring that new actions strengthen ongoing regional restoration efforts and contribute to healthier, more sustainable ecosystems.
Project delivery
Work includes:
- increasing access to safe water sources for native wildlife
- providing secure nesting sites for birds, bats, and other species
- supporting and expand landholder‑led conservation efforts
- improving biodiversity and ecological resilience in priority landscapes.
Expression of interest
Landholders interested in improving wildlife habitat on their property are invited to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to participate in the project.
Wildlife drinkers and nest boxes will be provided to increase the availability of water and safe nesting sites for birds, bats, and other native species.
This initiative offers landholders the opportunity to:
- build on existing conservation projects or start new ones
- enhance biodiversity and create healthier landscapes.
Eligibility
Eligible participants are landholders or land managers (with written permission from owner) in Warren and Bogan shires.

Cost
Drinkers and/or nest boxes will be provided free of charge to the selected landholders.
Commitment
- Once installed, landholders agree to provide ongoing monitoring and maintenance of drinkers and nest boxes, including filling and cleaning drinkers.
- Successful applications for on-ground activities will be subject to a 5-year agreement.
- Non-payment of rates and other Local Land Services fees and accounts may result in application ineligibility.
EOIs close Friday 3 April 2026, and successful applicants will be supported to install wildlife drinkers and nest boxes.
