In Our Backyard – Creative Experiences from Hearing Voices Peer Group
An exhibition sharing art works produced by members of the Wagga Hearing Voices Group has opened this week at Station Creative Workspace in Wagga Wagga.
The Hearing Voices Group is a peer led self-help group that provides a safe and supportive place for people with lived experience of hearing voices, visions, and other unusual sensory perceptions.
Murrumbidgee Local Health District Peer Support Worker, Ray Berry said the group brings together people with shared experiences so they can feel less alone and provide support for each other.
“If you hear voices, you are not alone. Studies show that around one in ten people will hear voices at some point in their lives,” Ray said.
“Hearing voices is a very personal experience and is different for everyone, in terms of what the voices say and the life events that provoke them.”
Starting in May 2025, the fortnightly group has been meeting at Unique State Art Space and working with Art Therapist Elaine Sullivan to produce artworks that explore and share their individual experiences.
“By exhibiting our artworks, we hope to promote the group and provide insight for other members of the community who may like to participate in the group or learn more about hearing voices,” Ray said.
Peer Facilitator for the Wagga Hearing Voices Group, Tabin Brooks said the group is pleased to have this opportunity to showcase the results of their art sessions in a community space.
“The exhibition is a powerful way of providing greater understanding, awareness and support for people with mental health concerns,” said Tabin.
“The process of creating visual representations of our experiences has led to dynamic conversations and insights between peers. We have also put together a booklet that shares these words and images.”
