Growing a career in regional health: Dr Kate's journey
Dr Kate Hurst is an Orthopaedic Senior Resident Medical Officer at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.
Now in her third year, Kate completed her junior medical officer years at MLHD, a decision that she credits in finding her specialty and thriving as a health professional early in her career.
We spoke with Kate about her experience as a JMO in MLHD and what she loves most about working in the region she grew up in.
Hi Kate! Can you start by telling us what you like most about being a doctor in the Murrumbidgee Local Health District?
Being a Wagga girl myself I have always had a goal to serve the community that gave so much to me growing up. Being a Doctor in the MLHD not only lets me do that, but it also allows me to serve the smaller and more remote communities that surround us.
The presentations are unique, the complexity of the medicine never ceases to amaze me and the teaching is second to none. I wouldn't dream of being a doctor anywhere else.
How did the JMO program help you in your career?
The JMO program, particularly in the MLHD, formed the basis of the career that I have working in orthopaedics today. From the support of the admin staff to facilitate work life balance to that of the consultants guiding me through the early stages of my career, I honestly don't think I would have ended up here without it.
The exposure and teachings are unlike any other hospital I've worked at. The MLHD looks after their own and helps you to achieve your career goals from day one.

I would say that you'd be mad not to. The networking within and between hospitals allows you to explore your career options broadly and deeply, you are well looked after, well remunerated and a valued member of the team, I couldn't rate it highly enough.
What’s one thing you wish someone told you before applying for the program?
I wish I knew just how quickly it would go. I had the best fun and learnt so much in my JMO years and before you know it, it passes you by, value this time!
