The Senior Oncology Pharmacist, who took up his position at Griffith Base Hospital (GBH) in March 2024, said the role involves direct patient care, providing education on complex treatment regimens, managing side effects and offering emotional support.
With GBH now having an oncology pharmacist onsite, some medications that were previously ordered from Sydney can now be dispensed - and soon compounded - by Ming onsite, ensuring the Griffith community has equitable and faster access to cancer treatments, and that patients waiting time for their medications arrive would be significantly shorter.
“This holistic approach to patient care aligns with my passion for helping others and making a tangible difference in their treatment journey,” he said.
“Working in oncology pharmacy involves collaborating with a diverse healthcare team, including oncologists, nurses, and researchers. This collaborative environment fosters a comprehensive approach to patient care, ensuring that treatment plans are safe, effective, and tailored to individual needs. Being part of such a team is both inspiring and fulfilling.
“Oncology pharmacists play a crucial role in advocating for patient access to the latest treatments and clinical trials. The opportunity to contribute to innovative research and improve treatment protocols is incredibly motivating. It allows me to be at the cutting edge of medical science while directly impacting patient outcomes.”
Ming, who completed a Master of Pharmacy with University of Newcastle in 2010, began his journey as an oncology pharmacist in a role with a leading cancer care centre, where he collaborated closely with multidisciplinary healthcare teams on medication regimens, minimising adverse effects, ensuring safe and effective treatment outcomes and enhancing patients' quality of life during their cancer journey.
“I realised the profound difference that knowledgeable and compassionate pharmacists can make in the lives of patients and their families,” he said.
“My decision to follow a career in oncology pharmacy stems from a deep-seated desire to be an integral part of the cancer care team, addressing the multifaceted needs of patients, and contributing to advancements in cancer treatment. It’s a field where I can combine my scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and compassion to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.”
For Ming, one of the most fulfilling parts of the job is the direct interaction with patients.
“Oncology patients often face challenging treatment regimens and significant emotional burdens. Being able to provide them with not only medication guidance but also emotional support and education about their treatment gives me a profound sense of purpose,” he said.
“Helping patients understand their therapy and manage side effects effectively can significantly improve their quality of life during treatment.
“I enjoy knowing that my work directly influences patient outcomes. By ensuring that each patient receives the most appropriate, safe, and effective therapy, I play a crucial role in their treatment journey.”
In Griffith, Ming has found his role to be “multifaceted” and rewarding.
“It involves direct patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, research participation, and ongoing education. Each aspect of my role is focused on improving patient outcomes and contributing to the advancement of oncology pharmacy practice,” he said.
“Griffith has a well-established reputation for excellence in healthcare. The institution’s commitment to high standards of patient care, and continuous improvement in healthcare practices strongly appealed to me. I was drawn to the opportunity to be part of an organisation that is at the forefront of innovation and excellence in oncology.
“The team at Griffith is known for fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. The emphasis on teamwork, mutual respect, and professional support was important to me. I wanted to work in a setting where I could thrive both personally and professionally, and where my contributions would be valued.
“My personal and professional aspirations align closely with Griffith’s mission and values. The institution’s commitment to improving patient outcomes, advancing medical research, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement made it the ideal place for me to pursue my career as an oncology pharmacist.”
For Ming, being based at Griffith offers a blend of professional challenges, personal satisfaction, and a strong sense of community.
“It allows me to make a meaningful impact, grow professionally, and enjoy a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. I appreciate the unique opportunities and experiences that come with working in a regional setting, and I am grateful for the chance to contribute to the well-being of the community,” he said.
Outside of work, Ming is an avid reader, who also enjoys travel and the outdoors.
“Traveling broadens my horizons, exposes me to new perspectives, and creates lasting memories. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a longer international trip, I always look forward to my next adventure,” he said.
Ming is also keen on volunteering and giving back to the community.
“This can range from community health initiatives to support groups for cancer patients and their families. Volunteering is a way for me to extend my passion for helping others beyond my professional role,” he said.
So where does Ming get the inspirational for his dedicated attitude and hard work? Turns out, it could be somewhat unexpected.
“I have been inspired recently by Taylor Swift’s talent and professional attitude. I was at her concert in Sydney in 2024,” he said.
