September is Sexual Health Awareness Month
September is Sexual Health Awareness Month, an opportunity to talk about the importance of sexual health to overall health and wellbeing.

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) is encouraging people across the region to make their sexual health a priority during the month by accessing regular sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, learning about HIV prevention options, and connecting with local sexual health services.
This year MLHD would also like to remind the community of the availability of free HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including for people in NSW who do not have a Medicare card, helping to remove barriers to HIV prevention and improve access to care. PrEP for people with Medicare is subsidised through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and is available from community pharmacies.
Lauren Coelli, MLHD’s HIV and Related Programs Manager, said Sexual Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to encourage open conversations about sexual health and ensure people know where to access support.
“Sexual health is an important part of overall health and wellbeing, yet many people put off getting tested or seeking advice because they feel embarrassed or think they are not at risk,” Ms Coelli said.
“Regular STI testing is a normal and responsible part of looking after your health. Many sexually transmitted infections can have no symptoms, so the only way to know your status is to get tested.”
Ms Coelli said early diagnosis and treatment can prevent long-term health complications and reduce the spread of infections in the community.
“Sexual health services are confidential, free and non-judgemental. Our clinicians are here to provide information, testing, treatment and support in a safe and welcoming environment.”
MLHD is also encouraging people who may benefit from HIV prevention medication to learn more about PrEP.
“PrEP is a highly effective medication that prevents HIV when taken as prescribed,” Ms Coelli said.
“Importantly, free PrEP is now available to people in NSW who do not have a Medicare number, ensuring more people can access this important HIV prevention option regardless of their visa or residency status.”
“No one should miss out on protecting their health because of cost or eligibility barriers. We encourage anyone who thinks PrEP may be right for them to speak with a healthcare professional or contact a sexual health service for advice.”
MLHD sexual health services provide a range of supports, including HIV and STI testing and treatment, HIV prevention and management, PrEP advice and prescribing, partner notification support, vaccination advice, education, and referrals to other specialist services where needed.
