Providing nursing and midwifery care to people within your own community is a rewarding experience.

We are always seeking passionate people including assistants in nursing, enrolled nurses, registered nurses (RN), registered midwives (RM), clinical nurses, midwife educators as well as nurse and midwifery managers. 

Going ‘rural’ and working in one of our regional hospitals or multipurpose services gives you a unique opportunity to broaden your skill mix through a range of varied daily presentations; no two days are ever the same working in one of our regional facilities. 

If you would prefer to specialise in a particular area of nursing, our district and base hospitals which are located in our larger towns, can provide you with the chance to further grow your career within your specific area of interest. 

For registered midwives we can provide rewarding opportunities in our larger hospitals including Cootamundra, Deniliquin, Leeton, Temora, Tumut, Young, Griffith and Wagga Wagga. 

We can offer RN/RM opportunities in many of our facilities, with specialist RM roles at both Griffith and Wagga Wagga Base Hospitals.

GradStart - Nursing and Midwifery

We offer a comprehensive program for first year registered nurses (RNs) in many of our hospitals and direct entry registered midwives (RMs) into Griffith and Wagga Wagga Base Hospitals. 

Expand your clinical skills, while building on professional and organisational knowledge in our interesting and supportive clinical environments. 

We have a range of settings to choose from, including Wagga Wagga and Griffith Base Hospitals, district hospitals, multipurpose services, and health services. Each facility provides great opportunities to learn and explore different nursing environments. 

Our GradStart program offers:

  • a comprehensive 12 month program
  • 2 x 6 month rotations (GradStart RN)
  • GradStart RM program includes rotations  
  • full time and part time options
  • intakes for February and August
  • orientation and supernumerary at commencement of rotations
  • five paid face to face study days
  • monthly virtual in-services by a GradStart clinical nurse educator
  • ongoing clinical nurse educator support at each facility/ward/unit

Our maternity services have had undergraduate and postgraduate midwifery students for a number of years and we are committed to ensuring that all students receive the best opportunities during their learning experience.  

Our skilled and supportive team will provide a dynamic learning environment enabling student midwives to become safe and competent practitioners. We have excellent retention rates on completion of the program. 

All sites are supported by midwifery educators either based on site or within our district.

Mathew Ryan - Transition to Professional Practice Program

So, the NewGrad program, really for me, was to step out of my comfort zone. For the first six months, I started at  Holbrook Hospital. Although it's a small and quiet rural town, everyone's very friendly, everyone makes you feel as though you're welcome and that helps that makes me enjoy my job. Now my second rotation of NewGrad on the orthopedic ward at Wagga, from 7:00am to 3:30pm there's 
always something new to learn, from antibiotics to surgical wounds,it's nonstop.

Rebecca Willis - Aboriginal Cadetship Program

The Aboriginal cadetship programme, it's an Indigenous nursing and midwifery cadetship. Nursing, for me is about helping people, it's about helping my community, as well. Aboriginal community has a lot of chronic disease and there's a lot of health issues and being an Aboriginal nurse, it's a friendly face, it's being able to support community but it's also about supporting my family as well and having that 
stability so when I'm finished I'll have more clinical knowledge and more skills.

The beauty of being here in Murrumbidgee Local Health District, is the huge opportunities that you have to progress into the, the chosen field you may have and that may well be into a specialty area like intensive care or renal perioperative. We certainly got specialty programs in their second and third year of nursing, that allows you to enhance your scope in that area of knowledge and expertise.

Ashton Yates - MidStart Program

I commenced my MidStart program in Wagga in June this year. I have been able to work in a variety of areas including the antenatal clinic, the labour ward, postnatal floor and special care nursery. 

Rebecca Willis - Aboriginal Cadetship Program

I wouldn't have  been able to take on this degree if it wasn't for the program. It's the difference between working full-time and being able to work as an AIN 12  weeks a year and being paid for that, as well as 40 weeks a year you're paid to study. That's a huge opportunity for me as a single parent and it's the  difference between working and doing your degree.

So, some of the best things about the program is you're in a team environment and it's very team orientated. That's one of the main reasons why I've enjoyed the NewGrad program.

The beauty of being in a rural area, is that everyone is so involved in making sure that they succeed. They want these people to stay, whether it's here in Wagga, Griffith or any of the smaller sites throughout the District.

I feel that we have a lot of support here in Wagga, from the educators, to the nurse unit managers as well as the lecturers out at Charles Sturt, all the staff on the whole maternity unit, the support is just endless.

Rebecca Willis - Aboriginal Cadetship Program

To anybody  who's thinking about getting into the cadetship, I advise you just to give it a go. It's an amazing opportunity and it's really worthwhile.

Ashton Yates - MidStart Program

I would recommend the MidStart program for any registered nurse, if you have that passion for midwifery, I would definitely recommend it because it's such a rewarding career. Being there for when the baby takes their first breath is indescribable.

In a community like Griffith, even though it's a city, it's still a very community-focused town.

Many staff actually live here locally, so they're very passionate about providing high care service to our community members. You just have to do your shopping or go to the gym or you know go for a run, you always run into someone you, you might provide a care to and how nice is it actually to see them well and talking positively about your service here, so that's something i'm really passionate about.

I'm really excited to see the new hospital come along, we have a lot of technology here but we now need a little bit more room and I'm really excited to see that coming. The new paediatric award was opened on the 13th of October,  they've also opened the new non-clinical services building.

For the size of the town, Griffith has a really high concentration of really good restaurants. My husband's a chef, he's got quite high expectations when it comes to food.
