Water sharing plan reviews

The Natural Resources Commission reviews water sharing plans to identify opportunities to improve water sharing plan provisions and support better outcomes for the environment and people.

decorative

The Natural Resources Commission has a role under Section 43A of the Water Management Act 2000 to independently review water sharing plans approaching expiry and report our findings to the Minister for Water

Highlights

Independent reviews assess whether water sharing plans meet environmental, social, cultural and economic goals.
Reviews identify needed improvements to plan rules for communities and the environment.
Findings guide Ministerial decisions to extend or replace each plan.

How we review water sharing plans

We use a published evaluation framework to ensure our reviews are consistent, transparent and based on evidence. Our work is carried out under section 43A of the Water Management Act 2000.

We assess each plan by:

  • identifying key risks to environmental, cultural, social and economic outcomes
  • evaluating how current plan provisions are performing
  • reviewing evidence from monitoring data, modelling, research and expert advice
  • considering submissions from stakeholders, agencies and the community
  • identifying improvements to plan provisions to better achieve outcomes
  • incorporating new evidence and good practice in water planning.

Our reviews draw on:

  • hydrological, ecological and water‑quality monitoring
  • technical studies and modelling
  • agency input and expert interviews
  • submissions from stakeholders and the public.
