Dr Kathryn Williams
Dr Kathryn Williams is a distinguished physician-researcher specialising in obesity and metabolic health. She is currently the Head of Department for Endocrinology at Nepean Hospital and also the Clinical Lead for Australia's first public lifespan obesity service, the Nepean Blue Mountains Family Metabolic Health Service. Kathryn leads research programs focused on severe clinical obesity, including the needs of people affected, the associations with social determinants of health and the impact of management.
Dr Williams is a distinguished physician-researcher specialising in obesity and metabolic health. Following graduation with first-class honours in Medicine from the University of New South Wales (2001), they completed specialist training in Endocrinology (2012).
They concurrently pursued a PhD at the University of Sydney, culminating in a doctoral thesis titled: "The Clinical Relevance of Non-Invasive Measures of Liver Health and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in Diabetes Mellitus."
Since 2021, Dr Williams has held the position of Head of the Department of Endocrinology at Nepean Hospital. They are a Conjoint Senior Lecturer within the Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney. Dr Williams is the Clinical Lead for Australia's first public lifespan obesity service, the Nepean Blue Mountains Family Metabolic Health Service (FMHS).
They lead a research program focused on severe clinical obesity, including the needs of people affected, the associations with social determinants of health and the impact of management.
Dr Williams is on the Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society Committee and is an Advisor to the Obesity Collective.
They have regularly presented on issues related to obesity in the media. Within the last few years, they have featured on Four Corners, JJJ Hack, 7:30 Report, 60 Minutes, SBS Tell Me What You Really Think and ABC Radio Melbourne and have been quoted in the Guardian and the Australian.
Over the last two years, they have been CI on grants to $6.5M (6 grants, 2 as CIA). They have secured recurrent funding of >$2.5M p.a. from NSW Health to enhance metabolic services at Nepean Hospital. They supervise(d) 5 research officers and 15 students, including 6 PhDs (1 completed).
