Celebrating half a century in nursing

This year, we proudly celebrate that remarkable milestone and honour the journey she began in 1975—one marked by growth, service, and a deep passion for helping others.

“Nursing was very different when I began,” Janet shared. “It was hospital-based training with a very military-style structure. We stood when senior staff entered the room, addressed everyone by their titles, and bed-making was a lesson in perfection.”

Janet commenced her nursing career at Fairfield District Hospital in 1975, later working across a number of hospitals including Campbelltown, Westmead, and Nepean Private.

After completing her training, she worked as a Registered Nurse and was respectfully addressed as “Sister,” a title that reflected both professionalism and pride. She later pursued Midwifery and worked in the field from 1979 to 2002.

As more nurses moved into university-based education in the 1990s, Janet adapted once again—earning a Bachelor of Health/Primary Healthcare while continuing her work as a midwife.

Her journey eventually led her to Community Child and Family Health Nursing in 2002, where she found her true calling.

“I found an opportunity to move away from the medical model, focusing on primary healthcare and providing support to new parents. One of the things I find most rewarding in C&F nursing is the focus on early detection, early intervention and health promotion.”

Since 2022, Janet has been part of the Community Health team in the Penrith LGA, continuing to support families with the same warmth and expertise she’s brought throughout her career.

Janet’s colleagues describe her as grounded, generous, and deeply committed to her community. Her 50-year legacy is a rare and powerful example of dedication, adaptability, and care.
