Compassionate care where health and justice meet
In Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD), the new Medical Forensic Unit (MFU) is now open, offering critical support to individuals navigating the aftermath of sexual assault and domestic and family violence.

This specialised unit marks a crucial expansion of services, providing a compassionate and trauma-informed approach to medical care and forensic investigation.
Glenys, a dedicated clinician within the MFU, says the service provides care to a broad range of community members.
"People presenting to our service come from all walks of life and backgrounds – sadly experiencing sexual assault or domestic and family violence is more common than many people realise," says Glenys.
Patients who are assessed by the Unit will see a doctor or nurse who work with a counsellor to provide a medical, forensic and psychosocial response.
"We support people through some of their most vulnerable moments. We cannot change a person’s experience of trauma but providing high quality, compassionate health and forensic care which is trauma informed and then seeing the positive impact that can have is rewarding," says Glenys.
This comprehensive approach extends beyond patient care, with the Unit coordinating extensive liaison with other health teams, GPs, support services, and the crucial task of preparing expert certificates for court and giving evidence.
Navigating the sensitive and complex nature of these cases demands a unique skillset.
"There is a real need to support patients in a trauma informed way, ensuring they understand their choices following a traumatic event," she explains.
"It’s critical when interacting with our patients that they feel believed and supported whilst maintaining an open and honest dialogue about the forensic process, some of its limitations, and our role in the justice system."
For clinicians considering a career in this specialised field, Glenys offers valuable insight.
"This way of working is really rewarding professionally and can make a real difference to our patients’ care experience," she adds.
The establishment of a standalone Medical Forensic Unit for the District marks an exciting time of growth, with the team currently recruiting a Clinical Nurse Specialist to ensure support in the specialty field is maintained.
"It’s a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the growth of this new unit which provide such needed and specialised services."
