From high school cadet to Emergency Registered Nurse
Nepean Hospital Emergency Department Nurse Jemma Sutton didn’t always picture herself in scrubs. In fact, she once dreamed of becoming a vet, but a year 10 work experience placement changed everything.

“That’s when I realised how rewarding and fulfilling nursing could be. Helping people during some of their most vulnerable moments. It’s hard to compare that to anything else,” says Jemma.
Jemma, a proud Aboriginal woman, began her nursing journey through the Aboriginal Initiatives in Nursing Education (AINE) program offered by Nepean Hospital while she was still in high school. From there, she completed her Certificate III in Health Services Assistance and began working as a cadet in a surgical ward all while studying a Bachelor of Nursing on a scholarship.
“The AINE program really shaped my path. It gave me the confidence, practical skills, and emotional tools I needed to pursue nursing.”
Now a full-time Registered Nurse (RN), Jemma has completed her new graduate year and is working in the fast-paced Emergency Department. She was recently named NBMLHD Aboriginal Nurse of the Year, a recognition of her dedication to excellence in care and advocacy.
Like many in the profession, Jemma has faced challenges especially in balancing shift work, study, and life.
“Time management was a big one. But I always felt supported whether it was from clinical educators, mentors, or just my colleagues on the floor. The friendships you form here really matter.”
Jemma mentions nursing has shaped her both personally and professionally.
“It’s taught me resilience and compassion. It’s made me value meaningful relationships and shown me how much impact we can have on others' lives.”
Looking ahead, Jemma is committed to continuous learning and is passionate about shaping a health system that is both compassionate and effective.
When sharing advice for others who are considering a career through NBMLHD's workforce pathways Jemma tells people to take the leap.
“Go for it. Embrace every experience. The path might not be straight, but every step teaches you something valuable.”
Jemma is one of many inspiring nursing graduates supported through Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District’s Aboriginal and workforce pathways.
