Home-grown nursing graduate joins Lithgow Hospital
Lithgow Hospital has welcomed a bright new face to its ranks, as recent graduate nurse Tayla Deveigne embarks on her career serving the community she’s always called home.

For Tayla, joining the team at her local hospital isn't just a job – it's a deeply personal goal fuelled by years of connection and a genuine desire to make a difference.
"I was exposed to healthcare from a young age. My mum works in private day surgery, and I’ve always had that experience of coming to see her at work. I liked to go to work with Mum and see everything that was happening,” says Tayla.
This early fascination sparked an interest that would eventually blossom into a vocation.
"I know how important it is to be a part of making someone’s life better. It's the fulfillment you get when you can help others when they are vulnerable, not just physically but emotionally."
Choosing to begin her nursing career at Lithgow Hospital was a natural progression for the lifelong resident.
"Lithgow is my hometown, not only have I grown up here, but I also had the opportunity to work as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) before starting my new role."
This prior experience provided invaluable insight into the hospital's culture and the camaraderie amongst the staff.
"I had first-hand experience to witness the team that works here, how close they are, how they foster new nurses, and how supportive they are. I really enjoy the environment and love working with everyone that I work with," says Tayla.
The rural setting of Lithgow Hospital offers new graduates like Tayla a unique advantage where the opportunity to explore a diverse range of experiences is a daily occurrence.
"Every day offers something new. I know that each day that I come into work, I am going to learn something new. Each patient experience and situation has been different, providing me with the opportunity to learn."
Currently in the Emergency Department, her upcoming rotations will see her gain experience in the inpatient ward and theatres, providing a well-rounded foundation in acute care.
While she is embracing the diverse opportunities, Tayla has a clear area of passion.
"Midwifery. I was interested in it as a kid and it’s originally why I got into nursing. That is a path that I want to go down, and Lithgow offers a really good program to do that. I’ll aim to do that over the next five years,” says Tayla.
With her local roots, her early exposure to healthcare, and her enthusiastic attitude, Tayla Deveigne is a welcome addition to the Lithgow Hospital team. Her dedication to learning and her genuine desire to care for her community promise a bright future in nursing, right where her journey began.
Tayla is one of 89 new graduate nurses to begin a career in health care at Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District this year. A second intake of 89 new graduate nurses begin in June.
