"We understand that eating disorders are multifaceted," says Claire Marnane, Eating Disorder Coordinator.
"Our aim is to help individuals reduce harmful behaviours, restore healthy weight when needed, and address the underlying concerns about eating and body image."
The clinic's approach is tailored to each individual, beginning with a thorough assessment by a psychologist. This initial consultation allows for accurate diagnosis of the eating disorder and any co-occurring mental health conditions. From there, an evidence-based treatment plan is developed, incorporating the patient's preferences and needs.
"We offer two primary interventions: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Specialist Supportive Case Management," says Claire.
"These therapies are designed to empower individuals to regain control over their lives."
Beyond individual therapy, the service provides crucial support for families and carers, offering education and information to help them understand and navigate the challenges of eating disorders. Additionally, the clinic facilitates coordination with local community health teams through a dedicated case coordinator, ensuring a comprehensive support network.
Recognising the potential for medical complications, the service also coordinates local inpatient admissions when necessary and facilitates psychiatric consultations when required.
The Eating Disorders Consultation Service is available to adults aged 18-65 living within the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District who are diagnosed with, or exhibit behaviours consistent with, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, or OSFED (Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder).
Crucially, individuals must be willing to engage with a GP for regular medical monitoring and must not be receiving concurrent eating disorder treatment elsewhere.
Referrals can be made through the New South Wales Mental Health Line, available 24/7 at 1800 011 511. Individuals already connected with a community health team within the District can also be referred directly through the Access Liaison.
