As a passionate and driven intern with a strong commitment to helping others, Matthew is looking forward to the wide-ranging experiences he’ll gain in his first year as a practising doctor.
“I’ve always been drawn to health because I wanted a job, I could really be proud of—a role where I could make a difference in people’s lives. It's a field where every day you have the chance to contribute to something bigger than yourself,” says Matthew.
“Working at NBMLHD means I get to experience a wide range of cases with patients from all sorts of backgrounds—different cultures, socioeconomic statuses, and age groups.”
During his time as an intern Matthew will rotate through various departments at Nepean Hospital, including Emergency Department (ED), Geriatrics, Relief, Thoracic, and Orthopaedics.
With aspirations of specialising in anaesthetics Matthew is eager to expand his medical knowledge across different specialties and gain a broad range of experience.
“I’m excited to learn as much as I can. There’s so much to take in, and I know I’ll pick up things I didn’t even realise I needed to know.”
“I’m especially excited about the excellent critical care pathway here, which is a huge plus as I'm aiming to specialise in anaesthetics. This variety and hands-on experience in such a busy environment are exactly what I need to build my skills and become a well-rounded doctor.”
For now though, as he settles into his new role, Matthew reflects on one memorable moment in the Emergency Department with his very first patient.
“I ended up giving them a sandwich and a juice box. It might sound simple, but it really hit home that sometimes a bit of human kindness is the best treatment we can offer.”
Matthew is one of over 70 JMOs who have commenced their medical careers with Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District in 2025.
