Nepean Hospital progresses towards Baby Friendly accreditation
Nepean Hospital is continuing its commitment to providing high-quality maternity and newborn care through its work towards accreditation under the Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI).

Developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, the BFHI is a globally recognised quality improvement and accreditation program that promotes evidence-based maternity and newborn care, with a strong focus on protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding. Health services seeking accreditation are assessed against the internationally recognised Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
Through its work towards BFHI accreditation, Nepean Hospital is strengthening the support available to women and families to make informed infant feeding decisions and achieve their breastfeeding goals. The initiative is also helping embed a consistent, family-centred approach to care from pregnancy through to birth and beyond.
Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Helen McCarthy, says the initiative reflects the hospital's commitment to delivering safe, compassionate and respectful care.
“The Baby Friendly Health Initiative helps ensure families receive high-quality support at every stage of their care. It strengthens the way we work together to provide consistent information, encouragement and guidance tailored to each family's individual needs and choices,” says Helen.
The initiative brings together midwives, nurses, lactation consultants, medical teams and support staff, who play an important role in supporting women, babies and families during a significant life event.
“This work is about creating a positive experience for every family. We want parents to feel informed, respected and empowered as they welcome and care for their new baby,” says Helen.
The initiative includes staff education, improved breastfeeding support, skin-to-skin contact after birth, and helping parents build confidence in feeding and caring for their baby.
Nepean Hospital extends its thanks to all staff who support women, babies and families every day, helping create strong foundations for lifelong health and wellbeing.
