The certification process involved a comprehensive assessment across energy consumption, water usage, waste reduction, chemical management, and community engagement. By implementing strategies such as optimising freezer temperatures, recycling programs, and reducing printing, the laboratory has significantly lowered its carbon footprint.
“One of the most impactful changes was the redevelopment of the pathology department, which incorporated energy-efficient heating, cooling, and lighting systems. This upgrade has led to substantial reductions in energy consumption and operational costs,” says Stephen Parker, NSW Health Pathology’s Nepean Senior Operations Manager.
The laboratory's commitment to sustainability aligns with the broader goals of the
Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. By participating in various sustainability and climate action working groups, the team has been able to collaborate with colleagues and implement innovative solutions. These efforts combined has resulted in Platinum certification from My Green Lab.
“This achievement not only sets a new standard for laboratories in the region but also inspires other healthcare facilities to adopt sustainable practices,” says Stephen.
By prioritising sustainability, Nepean Hospital's laboratory is contributing to a healthier planet and a more resilient healthcare system.
