The two Junior Medical Officers (JMO) are currently rotating through the hospital’s General Medicine department and have found their first few weeks on the job as both a challenging and rewarding experience.
“I’ve been preparing for this moment for four years, it’s a great feeling to finally get into it. I’m getting used to how everything works buts it’s been such a rewarding time helping people,” says Tyler.
“A career in health has always been appealing to me. I’ve always wanted to help people in a practical way and be hands on. During my time here I hope to get a broad perspective on medicine before rotating through other areas like oncology and emergency.”
For Owen, his interest in a career in health care began as a child.
“My dad was diagnosed with non-hodgkin's lymphoma when I was 12, so as a kid I wanted to choose a career which helped my dad and pay it forward. Ever since then health care was the career for me,” explains Owen.
Moving interstate can be a daunting time for anyone but Owen says the local community has really been welcoming, making it an attractive option to consider a long-term career at Blue Mountains Hospital.
“I think coming interstate to NSW I wanted to get a taste of both Sydney living, but also the Blue Mountains and the rural regions. I think it is definitely something that is driving me towards my future career, working in a regional setting and I think the Blue Mountains is a lovely mix of being not too far away from anything.”
“The staff here at the hospital have been amazing. I am finding my feet here and it is really easy when everyone's so supportive. It was a bit of getting thrown in the deep end day one, but everyone's helped us to stay afloat. It’s been great,” says Owen.
Tyler and Owen are two of over 70 JMOs who have commenced their medical careers with Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District in 2025.
The new doctors will receive formal and on-the-job training as they rotate across different specialties during their intern year, including surgery, medicine and emergency medicine.
