New menopause support service launches
A vital new service has launched at Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD), offering support for women experiencing severe or complex menopause symptoms.

The Menopause Referral Service aims to break the silence surrounding menopause and empower women to seek effective treatments and manage their symptoms with confidence.
Holly Miller, Specialist Menopause Service Coordinator, says the introduction of the service in the Nepean Blue Mountains region comes at a crucial time, as many women experience peri-menopause and menopause with limited understanding and support.
“The service is a significant step forward in ensuring women with complex needs receive the specialised care they deserve,” says Holly.
The Menopause Referral Service provides access to a Women’s Health Nurse and Women’s Health Physiotherapist, comprehensive assessment, individualised management plans, referral to local services, management of postmenopausal health-related risks, along with resources and follow up reviews.
“Depending on symptom severity, some women require a higher level of intervention. Our ability to escalate to multidisciplinary virtual care through the Specialist Menopause Service ensures seamless access to a wider range of specialists,” says Holly.
The new service is part of a statewide network of menopause hubs and referral services implemented by NSW Health, with NBMLHD being supported by the Specialist Menopause Service (Hub) located in South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD).
Laura O’Flynn, Specialist Menopause Service Coordinator, emphasises the service’s commitment to empowering women throughout their menopause journey.
“Up to one in four women experiences severe and debilitating symptoms, and we want them to know that help is available,” says Laura.
"We’re building a supportive community where women feel comfortable discussing their experiences and accessing the care they need. This service is about more than just managing symptoms, it's about empowering women to prioritise their long-term health and wellbeing,” says Laura.
Referrals to the service are accepted from a wide range of healthcare professionals, including LHD clinicians, GPs, Women’s Health Centres, Family Planning NSW, private specialists, allied health professionals, and Nurse Practitioners. Self-referrals are also accepted and triaged by service coordinators.
This collaborative approach ensures women have access to a multidisciplinary team of specialists.
