Palliative care volunteers win state award
Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District’s (NBMLHD) Nepean Hawkesbury Supportive and Palliative Care volunteer team has won NSW Palliative Care Volunteer Team of the Year at the 2026 NSW Palliative Care Volunteer of the Year Awards.

The compassionate and dedicated volunteers play an important role offering non-judgemental and reassuring companionship to clients receiving services under the NBMLHD Supportive and Palliative Care team, enhancing quality of life for them and their families.
The volunteers visit clients at home and in hospital, including those at the end of life, providing respite for carers, transport and shopping assistance when required, as well as biography services, social connection and advocacy.
NBMLHD Palliative Care Volunteer Coordinator, Kylie Clark says the Nepean Hawkesbury Supportive and Palliative Care volunteers embody kindness, altruism and the very best of humanity.
“Our volunteers walk alongside patients and their families with compassion and humility. In doing so, they also help create space for moments of joy, humour and connection, even in the most challenging of circumstances.”
“By showing up in these moments, they validate these deeply human experiences and gently support individuals and families to come to terms with their lives and find personal meaning.”
“Every volunteer demonstrates profound empathy and respect for each person’s unique experience of living with a life-limiting illness. They never turn away from the difficult, the sad or the bittersweet, but instead walk with open hearts and attentive ears, ensuring people feel truly heard,” says Kylie.
