Ryan is currently acting Clinical Nurse Specialist with the Nepean Inpatient Palliative Care team, but his nursing journey began almost a decade ago.
“My mum was treated for cancer at Nepean Hospital. That experience inspired me to pursue nursing and give back,” says Ryan.
While still in high school, Ryan enrolled in the T-VET nursing course and began working as an Assistant in Nursing in 2018 while completing his Bachelor of Nursing. He went on to work across the District in facilities like Springwood and Blue Mountains hospitals, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, supported testing clinics at Nepean and Blue Mountains.
His graduate year included rotations through Oncology, Emergency, and Palliative Care. He then secured a position in Nepean Emergency and completed a Graduate Certificate through the University of Tasmania before stepping into his current acting role in Palliative Care.
Throughout his career, Ryan has embraced the District’s workforce development opportunities.
“The Advanced Life Support course was a standout. It deepened my clinical knowledge and enhanced my communication skills I use every day in Palliative Care.”
He’s also completed training in paediatric and palliative care, preceptorship, child protection, and more.
“Each course helped me build a broader skillset and find clarity in where I want to focus my career.”
“Working towards the role of Clinical Nurse Specialist gave me structure. It helped me build quality improvement skills and develop in-service education. Tools I now use in my current role.”
Looking ahead, Ryan plans to undertake postgraduate study in Quality and Safety and complete the District’s Aspiring CNC program.
“Careers in health aren’t always linear. The experiences you take on along the way can shape new goals and passions.”
