Belmont Hospital is a 150-bed hospital located by Lake Macquarie, on the land of the Awabakal people. We offer many different health services to help people in our community. Please speak to our staff if you have further about the service listed below.
Our Services
We are dedicated to providing a wide range of healthcare services designed to meet the needs of our community. From inpatient and outpatient care to specialised clinics, we ensure patients receive high-quality treatment in a supportive environment.
Our team of skilled professionals is committed to offering personalised care tailored to each patient’s needs, helping to promote recovery and wellbeing. Whether you require emergency care, surgical treatment, or ongoing management of chronic conditions, we are here to support your health journey.
Our Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, every day. It has 15 beds, including special areas for serious emergencies. We help around 30,000 people each year. You should come to the Emergency Department if you have a serious or life‑threatening illness or injury, such as chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden collapse, uncontrollable bleeding, or another urgent medical emergency.
If a doctor decides a person is required to stay in hospital they are admitted as an inpatient. They will be supported by medical, nursing, allied health and support staff during their stay.
We have up to 80 medical care beds across 7 wards. Some of the areas we focus on include:
- General medicine
- Older people’s health (Geriatrics)
- Heart care (Cardiology)
- Stroke recovery
- Breathing problems (Respiratory)
- End-of-life care (Palliative care)
- Alcohol and other drugs
We also have a detox unit to help people over 18 safely stop using alcohol or drugs. This service can be access by calling 1300 660 559.
Surgical services are access by a hospital doctor or General Practitioner (GP) referring you to our surgical team. We have 4 operating theatres for planned and emergency surgeries. We don’t do high-risk surgeries at Belmont because we don’t have an intensive care unit. If needed, patients are sent to another hospital for specialised care.
Common surgeries we do include:
- General surgery (like hernia repair or appendix removal)
- Urology (bladder and prostate care)
- Women’s health (gynaecology)
- Bone and joint surgery (orthopaedics)
- Skin and breast surgery (plastics)
- Ear, nose, and throat (ENT)
- Dental and eye surgery
We have special areas for patients before and after surgery, including day surgery and recovery rooms.

Outpatient clinics require a hospital or community doctor referral for an appointment. Various outpatient clinics are available, and we offer appointments by phone, video, or in person. Key clinics include:

Other Services
- GP Access: Offers services for patients needing medical care but not requiring emergency treatment, ensuring timely support outside regular hours. Open 6pm-10pm. Bookings can be made by calling 02 4926 0500.
- Radiology: X-rays (including dental), CT scans and ultrasounds. We accept referrals from both inside the hospital and from external healthcare providers.
- Pathology / Blood Testing: We take blood and other samples to help check your health. If you have a referral, community members can come to the Blood Collection department for testing between 8:00 am and 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
- Midwifery Group Practice: For healthy women who want to give birth at Belmont Hospital birth centre with midwife care, or at home.
- Aboriginal Health Liaison: An officer is available at the hospital for social, cultural and practical support.
- Rehabilitation Programs: Stroke, heart and lung recovery programs are available.
- Children & Families: Appointments for early support, developmental care and parenting guidance for children and families aged 0-5 years. Call (02) 4923 6920 for an appointment
