What is digital inclusion?
Digital inclusion means all individuals in NSW have opportunities to access, afford and engage safely with digital technologies, services and online resources, regardless of their circumstances.
There are several key aspects to digital inclusion.
Digital connectivity
Digital connectivity serves as a foundational component, ensuring that everyone has the means to access the internet. However, connectivity alone is not enough.
Affordability
Affordability of internet, devices and services is equally important. This includes the cost of devices and internet services, which must be within reach for all individuals to enable their full participation in the digital realm.
Digital ability
Digital ability, or digital literacy, is another component. It involves equipping individuals with the skills needed to effectively navigate and use online resources and connect to the internet. Without these skills, even those with connectivity and affordability may struggle to make the most of digital opportunities.
Accessibility
Accessibility of digital services and resources is also essential for removing barriers. Designing or buying digital tools and platforms with accessibility in mind ensures everyone can engage with and benefit from the digital experience, regardless of their abilities, age, background or circumstances.
Digital trust
Digital trust and safety is also vital for enabling people to participate online. Supporting people with the skills and tools to engage online in a safe and secure way builds confidence and encourages broader digital participation.
Recognising and addressing these key aspects of inclusion is crucial to establishing a digital society that is truly inclusive and accessible for all.
